Formal reports from UN GA committee in early December that formally note and confirm agreements from COP10 of the CBD. One report on UNEP that includes IPBES; the second on CBD.
The official report of the 10th Conference of the Parties (COP10) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was produced on 19 December 2010 and is online with the various decisions and other documents from the COP in Nagoya in late October.
The UN General Assembly has agreed to the formation of the Intergovernmental Science-policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) - announced by UNEP. It is said that this will be similar to IPCC, but for biodversity rather than climate. Lot of rather interesting questions to be answered as to remit, approach and governance, but UNEP now moving to organise a first plenary.
Bob has pointed out that PLoS has developed a Biodiversity Hub. Rod Page one of the Curators. Also a PLoS current for the Tree of Life.
Announcement of a conference in March 2012 in London: Planet under Pressure. Organised by IGBP and others - focus on science and sustainable development to tie in to the Rio +20 Summit later in 2012.
The proposed Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has received initial approval from the UN General Assembly, according to the UK government in a announcement. No details and no obvious response elsewhere yet, but there appears to be discussion on reporting and governance arrangements.
The European Platform for Biodiversity Research Strategy (EPBRS) held a meeting on Positive Visions for Biodiversity in Belgium from 16-19 November 2010, looking at vision for 2050 and the necessary developments needed to achieve that, particularly by 2020. Draft notes only available at this stage, but curiously no mention of collections, taxonomy, access and benefit sharing or the CBD.
Just published, the 2010 integrated assessment report of the UK Countryside Survey 2007, with a huge amount of information on trends in indicators linked explicitly to ecosystem services. /....

In summary:
Stable or improving: Indicators linked to freshwaters and soils were stable or improving. As they underpin many regulating and supporting services these service categories were also generally stable or improving.
Declining: Plant diversity indicators were declining (an 8% reduction in number of species in 200m2 vegetation plots between 1978 and 2007) as was nectar plant diversity, used here as an indicator of one aspect of the regulating service of pollination. Cultural indicators linked to plant species diversity and landscape had also declined.
Plus a lot of detailed analysis of trends observed for specific services linked to freshwaters, soils, plant diversity, pollinator food plants and an exploration of the use of CS data to assess cultural services and interactions between services.
IUCN and others have published a report on Global ocean protection : present status and future possibilities - good overview of Marine protected areas, with focus on what will be needed to deliver the target of 10% of the marine environment under the Nagoya commitments.
