The European Platform for Biodiversity Research Strategy (EPBRS) held a meeting on Positive Visions for Biodiversity in Belgium from 16-19 November 2010, looking at vision for 2050 and the necessary developments needed to achieve that, particularly by 2020. Draft notes only available at this stage, but curiously no mention of collections, taxonomy, access and benefit sharing or the CBD.

Just published, the 2010 integrated assessment report of the UK Countryside Survey 2007, with a huge amount of information on trends in indicators linked explicitly to ecosystem services. /....

In summary:
Stable or improving: Indicators linked to freshwaters and soils were stable or improving. As they underpin many regulating and supporting services these service categories were also generally stable or improving.

IUCN and others have published a report on Global ocean protection : present status and future possibilities - good overview of Marine protected areas, with focus on what will be needed to deliver the target of 10% of the marine environment under the Nagoya commitments.

FAO has just published a Policy on Indigenous and Tribal Peoples. Priniciples and implications are explored, with references to biodiversity. However, the links to CBD, access and benefit sharing are not explicit - possibly something to be developed in the future.

Interesting Nature news blog post yesterday on science policy discussions in the US on rare earth metals and their availabilty. This has been a fairly regular topic in the last five years with concerns on where the metals are and how markets operate.

Laura spoke on Collections Link.

I like the new Royal Society education site - http://invigorate.royalsociety.org/. Will be interesting to see if it develops further with more resources. Think I might try the crater experiment with flour this evening.

Ed Vaizey, minister with resposibility for museums in DCMS, has announced that the responsibilties of the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (soon to be abolished) could be transferred to the Arts Council. Will be interesting to think about how this might impact on natural history and science in museums, and the policy emphasis of central support for regional museums.
