Science Policy UK: BIS blog on public attitudes to science 2011

The UK Department of Business, Innovation and Skills has launched a new blog as part of a research project on public attitudes to science which will result in a report in the Spring of 2011 /....

.../ This follows up on a number of reports tracking public attitudes in the past few years and should, I hope, be the next step in the development of the policy cycle in this field.  These have been important in influencing use of public resources - both direct funding from BIS and the way in which the UK research councils, universities, science centres and museums have thought about the issues.  The earlier reports are:

and the Public: A review of science communication and public attitudes to
science in Britain (2000)

and which in turn have roots in and links to other earlier initiatives such as COPUS.

There was a development and consultation process for key areas arising from the 2008 report and earlier in 2010 we saw the launch of a series of five reports from BIS working groups dealing with different issues in science engagement, understanding and public attitudes.  These tend to represent the mainstream of UK thinking on this and are certainly worth keeping in mind as a current reference.There is a site available with links to the reports and a number of exploration/discussion tools.
