The UK government published a white paper in 2011 entitled The Natural Choice: Securing the Value of Nature, following a period of policy development described in a previous post. There are regular updates available on implementation.

The UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) has launched a consultation on the future of some of its research centres - British Geological Survey (BGS), the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH), the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) and the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) - asking whether they should be given independent status. The UK National Audit Office has produced a memorandum - Research and Development Funding for Science and Technology - for the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee in preparation for an inquiry on R&D funding - deadline for submission of evidence 28 August 2013.

The 17th meeting of the CBD Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) is being held in Montreal in October 2013. Draft papers are available for peer review to mid-July. Agenda emphasis will be on scientific support for the CBD strategic plan to 2020 and on the development of IPBES.

IUCN and UNEP-WCMC have produced Biodiversity priorities for the World Heritage List. Examines the criteria for listing, gaps in coverage and makes recommendations for development of the process.

The 6th Biodiversity in Europe Conference was held in Georgia - an intergovernmental meeting looking at pan-European efforts on biodiversity, mechanisms and progress under CBD. Agreement on establishing a pan-European Biodiversity Platform. Details not available yet because of UNEP's website, but advance preview from TEEB.

The government of Scotland has produced 2020 Challenge for Scotland's Biodiversity - A Strategy for the conservation and enhancement of biodiversity in Scotland.
